Kauri Hub Shining GreenGold

It's been a long wait, but finally this week, Year Ono launched their Sustainability learning journey with Mrs Daniel.

Firstly, we reminded ourselves of the everyday choices we can make to be more sustainable:

- pack a litterfree lunch

- use the community composters

- walk or bike to school

- put food scraps in the compost buckets

Next we took action;  last year SHS planted 700 trees. We set about rescuing them from under an avalanche of kikuyu grass.

Over the wet summer, some of the trees have quadrupled in height.  We can't wait to see how tall they'll grow this year.

Lastly we did a mapping and scavenger hunt activity to remind ourselves of all the special places around Sunnyhills that make us shine GreenGold.

Next time we're beginning to learn more about Climate Change.

Year Tahi Growing Kai

Year Tahi are learning how to grow kai.  We fed the mara kai with our own compost made with lunchbox scraps. Next we planted seedlings and watered them.

What's this??

Room tekau ma tahi found a germinated avocado seed in the compost. We potted it up. When we're grown ups perhaps we can pick the avocados 🥑

Next time we're going to make vegetable soup.

Year Rua Planting Flowers for the Bees

Year 2 are our Bee Kitiaki (Guardians). In our first Sustainability lesson with Mrs Daniel we collected compost to feed the soil from the hot composters. Next we put on gloves and took turns planting marigolds and calendula to feed the bees. Lastly we watered our new plants.

Next time we're going to make bee baths so our bees don't get thirsty.

Bird Corridor Rescue

This week Year Rima have been rescuing our bird corridor trees from under an avalanche of kikuyu grass. Some of the trees have quadrupled in height over the wet summer. We can't wait to see hiw tall they'll grow this year.

We also reminded ourselves of all the places that make us a GreenGold Enviroschool with a mapping activity and scavenger hunt.

Remember we're all responsible for making everyday decisions that help us be more sustainable. Here's some actions you can take:
- pack a litterfree lunch
- walk or bike to school
- use the community compost

Next time we go to Green Room we'll begin to look at sustainable energy.

Shining GreenGold with Kowhai

Kowhai have begun their 2023 Sustainability learning journey  with Mrs Daniel. We made a map and did a scavenger hunt to remind us of all the places that make Sunnyhills a GreenGold Enviro School.

Here are three things we can do every day to be more sustainable:

- walk or bike to school

- pack a litterfree lunch

- put our food scraps in the worm bin or compost bin

Watch this video to find out how we are minimising waste and how you can help:

Next time we see Mrs Daniel we'll be waging war on weeds.
