K2 Climate Change Challenge

Today K2 began looking at climate change. We began by clarifying the misconception that the hole in the ozone layer is to do with climate change.  It doesn't have anything to do with climate change but does go to show humans can come together to fix their environmental mistakes.

Next we took part in a Climate Change Breakout provided by Live Lightly at the Eye On Nature event. We worked as a team to solve the clues and learnt everyday actions we can take to live a lower carb life:

- bike or walk

- eat vegetarian more

- reuse items

Our time was 9minutes and 15 seconds. We won the class competition!! Mrs Daniel said we were quickest because we had great communication.

Next we found out there is lots of misinformation about climate change. We did a Kahoot and sorting game to investigate ideas about climate change and causes of carbon dioxide using the new KNZB Climate Ready Classroom resource.

Next time we'll learn about the role of scientists.

K1 Break Into Climate Change & Stormwater

K1 had a busy Sustainability session with Mrs Daniel today.  We began by starting our enquiry into climate change.

We discussed what we already knew and how it makes us feel:

Ashton: the climate is changing and the ice is melting and it makes me sad.  Joe Biden and the Willow Project are bad.

Edward: the air is getting hotter and there's going to be more floods.   Animals can't adapt to the climate.

We clarified that the ozone layer hole isn't to do with climate change but it does go to show that humans can change their habits and reverse the negative effects they have caused.

Next we did a Climate Change breakout provided by Live Lightly at the Eye on Nature Event.  We timed ourselves and are going to compete against the other Year 6 classes for the grand prize.

K1 thought the break out was exciting and difficult.  We used our brain power.  We learnt to work together, how we can live more sustainably, and to yell out answers so everyone knows. We wonder if we'll be the quickest ...

The times:

K3 - 16m 36s

K2 - 9m15s WINNERS

K1 - 15m 15s

We continued making meaning and connections about climate til morning tea.

Next we had a surprise special guest; Monique from the Stormwater Sleuths for a citizen science project looking at pollution in our drains.

Meet our trap:

We emptied the trap and audited the waste.

We'll monitor and log the waste each month.

Climate Change Break Out

K3 began learning about Climate Change today.  We started by talking about what we already knew:

Joey - climate change happens when you burn fossil fuels

Ivanka - it will make the arctic melt

Ethan - burning fossil fuels makes carbon dioxide

Gavin - the sea levels will rise

Damon - the planet gets warmer

Ethan - there will be more storms

Joey - the greenhouse effect means heat gets trapped in the atmosphere

Next we did a Climate Change breakout provided by Live Lightly at the Eye on Nature Event.  We timed ourselves and are going to compete against the other Year 6 classes for the grand prize.

K3 thought the break out was challenging and fun.  We learnt to work together, how we can live more sustainably, and to yell out answers so everyone knows. We wonder if we'll be the quickest ...

The times:

K3 - 16m 36s

K2 -

K1 - 15m 15s

Before morning tea we went out to trim the kikuyu grass from around our baby trees.

Year Six are using Keep New Zealand Beautiful's new Climate Ready Classroom Resource. Today we learnt:

- what climate change is

- about trustworthy sources

- the importance of carbon

- about gas givers and gas takers

Next we learnt about pest plants and the actions we can take to protect our trees. Enter the moth plant competition here: https://pfhw.org.nz/events-projects/moth-plant-competition/

Lastly, fresh snow peas from the Edible Garden for afternoon tea:

Room Six - Seeds Spread Everywhere

Room Six explored how seeds spread everywhere.

We discovered some plants are pests and took action to pull out invasive weeds.

Have you seen any moth plants? If you pull them out you can win prizes. Enter the moth plant competition here:https://pfhw.org.nz/events-projects/moth-plant-competition/

Room 7 do the mahi get the reward

Today with Mrs Daniel,  Room 7 learnt about pest plants in our environment. We pulled pest plants then as a reward we got to pull and eat carrots!

Welcome to our new classmate; Motuhi!

We didn't always know which was a precious plant and which was a weed, so next we did some research on types of weeds and how they spread. We reviewed our knowledge with a fun Kahoot.

Lastly we learnt about how we can protect the environment and win prizes by entering the MOTH PLANT COMPETITION: https://pfhw.org.nz/events-projects/moth-plant-competition/

Room Rua Ready, Set, Go

Room Rua reviewed our main Enviro projects with a Kahoot then opted to take action to help our environment.  We learnt about the moth plant competition and then went outside to work on clearing pest plants from the Bird Corridor.  To enter the competition simply click https://tinyurl.com/18i2w7zz  for the 2023 Howick Pest Free Moth Plant Competition before 6 April and be in to win

Room Tahi Ready to Take Action

Today Room Tahi reviewed all the places that help make us a GreenGold Enviroschool with a mapping activity, scavenger hunt and Kahoot. We learnt about how we can take action and win prizes by entering the Moth Plant Competition.  Simply click https://tinyurl.com/18i2w7zz  for the 2023 Howick Pest Free Moth Plant Competition before 6 April and be in to win

Room Rima Doing the Mahi

Room Rima got excited about invasive weeds with Mrs Daniel today. After a quick quiz and tending to the compost we went on a weed hunt.

We found moth plant and wolly nightshade. Lots of the learners want to talk to their whanau about entering the Moth Plant Competition. They were especially excited about the cash prizes! See the posters below for more details:
