Room 16 Learning how to grow kai

Today Room 16 were learning about how to grow kai in the Green Room with Mrs Daniel.  We watered the garden and picked broad bean pods.  It was fun to work out how to get the beans out.  We tasted the fresh baby broad beans straight from the pod.

Next we gave the pods to the worms in our compost.  They'll munch them up to make new soil to grow new food in.

In the sandpit we learned to share our toys and take turns with the hose.

Honey Crackles & Flower Gardening with Room 9

After reveiwing what we'd learnt about bees, Room 9 helped to make Honey Crackles with our very own Sunny Honey.  Madison said they were amazing and she could eat more.  They smelt good and tasted crunchy, said Curtis.  The tamariki recorded the recipe so they can make them at home.

Our bees need lots of nectar to make honey, so after morning tea we fed the flower gardens with worm tea and planted sunflower seeds.

K2's Cooking, Climate Change & Enviro Highlights

Today K2 cooked broadbean tops with ramen for a tasty snack.  Did you know that the flowers, leaves and stems of the broadbean plant are edible?

We also linked using the new food scraps bin to climate change action and took home an intergenerational survey to find out about our parents and grandparents experiences growing up.

Lastly we browsed the blog to find our enviro highlights over the last six years at Sunnyhills.  Some of your favourite experiences included:

- making tea

- learning about moth plants

- eating cabbage

- eating kai

- cutting weeds

- making garden signs

- making kawakawa leaf tea

- bee books

- planting trees

- nature art

- making videos

- tree planting day

- scavenger hunts

- kahoots

K3's Final Enviro Lesson

For our final Enviro lesson, K3 decided to get hands on and take action.  After we reviewed the new food scraps bins, we planted 40 Trees for Survival seedlings, worked in the Edible Garden and released the native trees from kaikuyu grass. Best wises for your continuing enviro journey at intermediate!

Room 8 Getting Out in Nature

Our keyword today was BIODIVERSITY.  We explored how all animals and plants are important as they each have places in our ecosystems.  To further understand this idea we completed an online food web game then got out in nature to see our ecosystems in action.

First we moved mulch and collected compost, then it was off to the mara kai to spread the nutrients on our veggies.  We could see the compost was teeming with life like centipedes, worms, spiders and cockroaches so we knew it was super healthy for our soil.

We turn our food scraps at school into compost to grow new food with and now everyone can do this at home too, so no nutrients go to waste.  Are you using your new food scrap bin?

Room 1 Celebrate Being Sustainable

Today Room 1 had their last Education for Sustainability lesson for 2023.  We celebrated by harvesting bok choi from the mara kai and cooking it with pasta.  YUM. To close off our Sustainable Energy inquiry we saw Mrs Daniel's electric car give a light show and investigated why our new food scraps bins at home are helping create a sustainable future.

Lastly we lent a helping hand for our hot composters by moving the mulch that was delivered in the weekend.  Well done & see you in 2024 Room 1!
