Reviewing Changes for our 2022 GreenGold Reflection

In November Sunnyhills will reflect on whether we are still a GreenGold Enviro School. Today our Year 6 children compared where we were in 2018, when we became a Greengold school, and what has changed.

We used the 2018 Prezi presentation and 2018 map that was created for our GreenGold reflection.  We put a red x next to the things we haven't sustained and added the new projects in.  Check out our evolution by looking at the new map below and clicking on the  Prezi link:

As well as continuing most of the practices, places, relationships and programmes from 2018, we've added some major new projects in the last four years.

The five new major changes we identified were:

1 Beehives with Sweet Azzz

2 The Bike Track with Trail Pro

3 Stormwater Sleuths with Tread Lightly

4 The newly renovated Green Room with stairs to the Edible Gardens

5 Bird Corridor Extension with Trees for Survival (over 700 trees)

6 Hot Composting with The Carbon Cycle Company and Waste Minimisation Fund following our Waste Audit.

We can't wait to Share & Shine at our GreenGold Reflection in November.

Progress Report on Our Native Trees

This week Year Five spent time trampling the kikuyu grass around the native trees we planted.  Some have already doubled in size! We hope the spring sun and rain bring on another growth spurt before summer.

Room 19 Dig In

Today Room 19 came to the Green Room for their first Sustainability lesson with Mrs Daniel.  They learnt all about how to grow food and made a compost smoothie to feed our veges.

Nimi Visits from Live Lightly

Nimi visited from Live Lightly as part of our Year 5's Sustainable Energy Inquiry.

Here's some key points for how we can "live lightly" on the planet:

Talk - share your knowledge
Shop - buy second hand
Eat - plant based meals more often &
try to reduce meat and dairy products   overall.
Grow -     grow food at home - it saves money, fresher, seld sufficient, sustainable and reduces carbon emissions
Move -   make sustainable transport choices like electric / hybrid cars, public transport, walk, bike or scooter. Reduce your petrol car use.
Energy -   save energy by turning off lights, turn off unused electronics, have 4 minute showers

We explored the sustainable dollshouse and made our pledges to live lightly.

What habits could you change to live more sustainably?

Conservation Week -.Growing Food with Fredge & 5+ Aday

It's Conservation Week! Year One are celebrating by learning about how to grow food with Fredge and 5+ A Day.

Over winter, we've grown broad beans, which we tried today. We also emptied the compost bin, watered the plants and fed the gardens with our worm tea. Lastly we planted beetroot seeds for spring.

Next time we'll learn about eating a rainbow. What's your favourite vegetable?
