Aporo Pai 🍎❤

Room 9 trimmed the kumara runners, so our plant will produce nui kumara.

Next we harvested our first aporo from the orchard. Some had worms, but the ones that didn't tasted tino pai!

Do you know how to stop the pesky bugs getting our fruit? Comment below:

Crunchy Cucumber Straight from the Garden

Today Room 9 & 10 have been learning about how the food scraps we put in the worm bins get turned into nutrients for our edible gardens.

Don't throw food in the landfill! Use a compost or worm bin.

We picked and ate a cucumber straight out of the vege patch. Yum! So fresh.

Meet Bernice

Meet Bernice the butternut squash who has been helping to teach our Junior children all about plant lifecycles this week.

We read about Bernice in the picture book Sophie's Squash by Pat Zietlow. It's a funny and sweet book about a girl who really likes vegetables. We talked about how plants grow and what they need.

We also sang One Seed by Lairie Berkner. It's got a great enviro message:

Lastly each Junior class weeded, composted, dug in the soil and planted a winter vegetable in the edible gardens.

We planted:
- kale
- peas
- broccoli
- cabbage
- pak choy
And we even planted butternut squash, so Bernice will have more friends.

We can't wait to watch them all grow and eat them!

Room 9 Harvest & Reflect

Today Room Nine ate tomatoes and watermelon from the edible garden, and planted a kumara. We thought about what we'd learnt in Enviro this term and what we'd like to do next.

Invasion of the giant zucchini!

Room 9a & 9 had their first enviro lesson with Mrs Daniel today. They discovered lots of fruit and veges growing in the edible garden.

We saw giant zucchini too. How did they get so big? The Year Ones knew; sun, water & soil. What kind of soil? Full of nutrients of course.

The children then used their muscles to pull giant weeds and put them in the compost. Those weeds were stealing our nutrients! Luckily we can get the nutrients back and put them on our veges. That's being sustainable. Nothing goes to waste.

Next week we're looking forward to growing
our own seeds and finding out about the mini beasts that help our garden.
