Year Three's Broadbean Harvest

Today Year Three harvested broadbeans and made broadbean dip to eat on crackers.

BROADBEAN DIP

Ingredients - broadbeans and salt

Method:

1 Pod broadbeans

2 Microwave for 2min on until outer layer splits

3 Double pod broads

4 Whizz in a food processor with salt until smooth

5 Serve on crackers

6 Dispose of pods into the compost or wormfarm

7 Save some pods to dry out so we have broadbeans to plant next year.

Constance "Picking them was really fun."

Carrie "I liked eating it"

Tino "The broadbeans on the cracker smelt like popcorn"

Awa "It tasted like avocado"

Coby "It looked like guacamole"

Josh " I have to say it was amazing"

Where do veges in the supermarket come from?

"All over the world" Eloise

"The shop owner grows it in their garden"

"They come from the earth"

"They come from farmers that grow them then they come in trucks" Audrey

We learnt about how vegetables get from market gardens to the supermarkets by reading this article Kumara Behind the Scenes.

Luca "From the market garden they put it in a truck to the packhouse and then into another truck to the distribution centre and then another truck to the supermarket"

There were alot more steps than straight from our Mara Kai! Also growing our own kai with our own compost with seeds we saved from last year is very cheap. And there are no trucks.  Are there is no plastic packaging.

We wanted to make our broadbeans look fun and healthy to eat, so we came up with our own broadbean mascots.

Sharing and Shining with Our Local Enviroschools

We love to share and we love to get new ideas!  In Week 5 Howick Primary School are groing to visit.  We are going to make a map to show all the Wahi that help make us a GreenGold Enviroschool.

Melody, Indi, and ... are going to show them around.  The Eco Leaders had fun today reviewing what helps to make us a GreenGold Enviroschool.  In our classes we'll create a map and list of hightlights to share.

You can check out Howick Primary School's Enviroblog here. Maybe they can share with us some of their great Garden to Table planting and recipes.

UPDATE - Report back from our Eco Leaders for the 12/11/24 visit.
Ellen "I think they liked Sunnyhills more than Waka"
Emme "They liked the beehives and orchard"
Frida "Our visitors thought it was cool we could ride our bikes on the track"
Melody "They were interested in the hot compost"

Year 4 Explore the Environmental Legacy of Tainui

Today Year Four warmed up by creating a fruit and vegetable alphabet. We could not think of anything for u and x. Can you?

Next we found out about Whakaotirangi, a Tanui rangatira who brought kumara to Aotearoa. We are going to follow in her footsteps by sprouting, planting and growing our own kumara.

Lastly each class took action in the Koanga Mara Kai, so we'll be reading to plant and grow.

Year 3 Kumara Kids

Year 3 are ready to put their delicious compost into action, by growing kumara. Now is the time to start feeding the garden soil ready for spring planting. We want kumara to harvest for our whole school Matariki Hangi 2025 so we need to start them now.

First we warmed up by creating a fruit and vegetable alphabet and exploring the changes in our koanga Mara Kai.

Next we learnt about Whakaotirangi, who brought kumara to Aotearoa NZ and started the first gardens. This meant iwi could settle and thrive in the new land of Aotearoa.

We drew Whakaotirangi in a traditional poupou format.

Then we learnt how to grow kumara slips.

We can't wait to see if our kumara tipu have sprouted in two weeks time.
