Our Pet Pest

While we were conducting the Landcare bird survey today with Mrs Daniel, Room 7 saw Louie, the much loved school cat, catch a silver eye. Luckily the little native bird got away, but two others were not so lucky.

Louie has been waiting for silver eyes to go under the neighbour's fruit tree net then easily catching them. Clever hunting but not great for our native birds.

Killing natives?! Does this make Louie and other cats a pest? We will be investgate more about  what it means to be pests, native, endemic, or intoduced, next term.

What do you think? Is Louie a pest? Comment below.

  4. Aww, poor Louie ♥
I wouldn't call Louie a pest, since Louie is a cat and cats do what they do, they are natural hunters.
Though I feel sorry for those little silvereyes!

  17. I don't think Louie is a pest in fact I don't think any cat is a pest because it could just be the animal instinct kicking in.

  22. Louie is really cute but I am not a big fan of cats so I am not really sure what to say. I guess that you can't tell a cat what to do. Also I guess that you can't up to your cat and say, "Don't kill birds. You know you can't." because they have a mind of their own. So half of me thinks that he is a pest and half of me thinks she isn't.

  23. I don't think Louie should be punished and he is not a pest, cats were made made for hunting. And if you think Louie should be killed you're wrong. It's just like saying kids can't play with toys. In the future Louie should get a bell to scare off the birds when around them, anyways he's never done it before. But remember in the olden days, they brought cats to kill rats and other pests. To be honest Louie is kind of a pest, but I'm still on his side, but when he dose get a bell he won't be a pest anymore.

  24. As Louie's owner, I most humbly object to the the thought of Louie being considered a pest. Firstly, no one has actually proven Louie's killed a bird, but he does enjoy the occasional cicada in summer. Secondly, we all know he is a fun, family-loving cat who loves nothing but be cuddled and scratched under his chin all day (Loiue is no bird killer!). Can you please rephrase the question? Louie's feelings may get hurt with such a false accusation..!
