Rooms Ono & Whitu Explore Food Webs & Plant Natives

Our keyword today was biodiversity.  We explored how all life is interconnected then played an online food web game ZSL Food Web. Next, we explored the relationships in our own native bush walk.  Some plants don't work with the forest because they've been introduced by humans, like the climbing asparagus.  We spent time weeding the pest plants while we listened out for tui in the kowhai tree.

Lastly we planted our Trees for Survival seedlings, so that next year's Eco Leaders can plant them on farms to protect water ways and grow new forests. Well done on your excellent mahi Rooms 6 & 7!

Room 14 Eating Honey Scones and Making Honeycomb

Today Room 14 sampled our delicious Sunny Honey with fresh scones.  We explored how bees are mathematicians and tried to make perfect hexagons just like their honeycomb.

K3 Kai & Karamu planting

Today K3 harvested bok choy and made green scones!  After our kai we planted karamu, kanuka and flax seedlings ready to grow for Trees for Survival. Well done on your hard mahi K3.

Stormwater Sleuthing with Room 3

Today Room 3 went with Mrs Daniel and Monique and Dom from Tread Lightly to the Tamaki Estuary to monitor the health of our local awa.  While the acidity and temperature were good, sadly the clarity and amount of plastic polution were poor.  Luckily our nitrate test showed that the spill in Auckland Central is not affecting our river.

We decided banning plastic straws, bottle tops and lollipop sticks would make a big difference, as well as packing litter free lunches.

Biodiversity with Room Rima and Wha

We continued to explore our nghere today and the idea of biodiversity - all life working together in food webs and eco systems.

On our nature walk we heard a grey warbler singing and saw how the tui's beak is especially evolved to fit into the kowhai flowers.  We talked about some of the species that live with our puriri tree including weta, bees, kereru and puriri moths.

Can you see the photo of the beautiful turkey tail fungus Room Wha found?

Our taonga endemic plants and animals all fit together.  Sadly we found an introduced pest plant - climbing asparagus, twisting up our trees. We spend time pulling it out.

Next we completed an online food web and researched taonga species. Lastly we played a native bush card game.

Next time we're looking forward to planting native trees and eating kai from the garden.
