Making our beehives more colourful, was a suggestion from our 2022 GreenGold Reflection and today it became a reality. Mrs Daniel and the Eco Group glued on the wooden flowers that Year 5 painted last year. Just in time for the Jubilee celebrations!

Today Year Two took action for our bees.
What have you learnt about bees?
Kasey "Bees can sting you."
"When the bees sting the sting comes out of there body" Yeja
Azara "When bees move the pollen it sticks on their fuzzy body"
Aila "Bees make honey with nectar from the flowers"
Mila "Bees spread the pollen"
Archie "Bees pollinate flower to flower".
How can we help our bees?
"Don't let them sting you or they die" Lucas C
Azara "Don't shoo them. Just stand still"
"Don't kill the plants" Kenny
"Water the flowers so they can get the pollen and nectar when it grows" Marcus
"Plant more flowers" Allan
We decided to grow flowers for the bees. First we read the seed packets.
What do the seed packets tell us?
Joshua "We can plant the seeds in the ground to make flowers for the bees and butterflies"
Chace "They will attract bees and butterflies"
Clara "The flowers will appear after 10weeks"
Archie "You have to plant them in well drained soil
Last year we learnt how to make seeds grow, so first we collected compost to give the soil nutrients. We saw lots of fungus and bugs!
Each of us helped to sprinkle the flower seeds on our new garden.
Alyssa "The seeds were tiny and all different"
While we were in the Mara Kai we also tasted broad bean leaves.
Leo " They taste minty"
We saw little bumble bees on the flowers.
Hopefully next term we'll see our flowers and even more bees!
Today Year 2 had Enviro with Mrs Daniel. They learnt about the important job our Sunny Honey Bees do pollinating our food.
Brylee "Bees help plants grow"
Jay "I had honey from the school so that's also why we have bees"
David said "Bees move pollen to another flower so they can make seeds"
Sophia added "Bees get nectar from the flower to make honey"
Lucy knew "If a bee stings you they will die"
Mila "Bees take pollen out of flowers"
Archie "They spit out the nectar at the hive"
Leo "If the bees are boys they will be called a drone"
We all visited the bee hives and camelias to observe the bees closely.
We wanted to help the bees by planting flowers for them.
Room 10 & 14 moved soil and fed the gardens with worm tea.
Room 13 planted broadbean seeds in the new bed Rooms 10&14 had created.
The broadbeans' black and white flowers will feed the bees with nectar.. The bees will move the pollen so the flowers turn into beans for us to eat.
Thank you for your mahi Year 2!
To finish off our big inquiry into growing kai, Room 19 investigated why plants have flowers. We discovered bees move pollen from flower when they drink nectar.
Afterwards we looked carefully at the flowers in the Edible Garden to see if we could see their pollen and and sticky stamens. We ate the sweet petals on the feijoa flowers. Yum!
We created our own paper flowers, with pollen dusters, petals and a sticky stamen. Next we made stripey pipe cleaner bees and moved pollen from flowe r to flower so they could turn into fruit. Well done Room 19!
