Kawakawa Tea Time with Room 18

Today we learnt about Aotearoa's special kawakawa plant. It has many uses including making a healthy tea. We tried the tea with Sunny Honey.

After lunch we explored the mara kai and learnt about the amazing world history of tea. Did you know it was first drunk in China?

Next time we see Mrs Daniel we're going to create our own herb teas.

K2 Get Future Fit

Today K2 launched into our learning by exploring biodiversity and the carbon cycle with KNZB Climate Ready Classrooms. We discovered human action is unbalancing the carbon cycle and played a fun game to explore the importance of biodiversity.

Next we investigated the Greenhouse Effect and Carbon Footprints. We used https://www.futurefit.nz/questionnaire to work our our carbon footprints.  The average foot print was 8.4947. International travel effects our footprint the most.

We discovered we can offset by eating less meat, have an electric car or use public transport or walk, compost, less long haul travel, and being careful with energy use.

Learning about climate change can be a bit sad so we talked about things we do to cheer ourselves up like walks, reading, playing sport, gardening and being with friends.

Lastly we focussed on the actions we can take to reduce our footprint and broke into groups to see how we could encourge this action in our community. Some ideas included writing a Kahoot, creating posters, writng a picturebook, a Scratch game, a boards game and a video.

After morning tea we helped to offset our carbon footprint by planting native hebes. Their flowers will feed our bees too.

Room 19 On the Hunt

Room 19 spent a little more time inside than expected today, because of the fire in South Auckland.  We learnt about pest insects in our Mara Kai, drew our 5+A Day mascot, Fredge and made playdough snails.

After morning tea we went on a bug hunt in the Edible Gardens. We saw snails, skinks, a prey mantis, monarch caterpillars, worms, spiders and lots of munched on leaves.

Next time we see Ms Daniel, we're going to harvest kumara for Matariki.

Room Wha Find Out About Herbs & Spices

We're investigating herbs & spices and their uses. First we tried some fresh tomato and basil soup, all grown in our own school gardens. Next we broke into groups for a hands on senses quiz.

We ended our lesson by a quick kahoot to review and weeding the Edible Gardens.

Next time we see Mrs Daniel we'll be trying kawakawa tea and learning about the world history of tea.

K2 - Invasion of the Tropical Army Worms!

K2 reviewed the importance of biodiversity and investigated how climate change will look and feel.

One consequence of climate change we discovered in the Edible Gardens. Because of the warm wet weather we've had an invasion of Tropical Army Worms. After our research we went on a search & destroy mission.

Hopefully the cold snap will help keep these manic munchers at bay.

Tomatoes & Herbs with Room Waru

Today Room 8 ate tomato and fresh basil soup, all grown in our own Edible Gardens.

This is what we thought:

Luca "Above average.  I like how the tomatoes were cooked because they were like my grandpa's"

Orlando "Yum"

Touma "It was sweet and salty and pretty good"

Timmy "It was delicious because I eat tomatoes"

Maddie "It was delicious because it has basil in it"

After morning tea we broke into groups to explore the herbs we grow in our gardens.  Herbs are edible leaves.  They don't make the main part of a meal they just add aromatic flavours.  Herbs can be turned into teas too.
