Room 9 Explore a world without bees

Room 9 reviewed the important job bees do pollinating our plants.  We drew illustrations to show a world with and without bees.  Can you see the difference? Mrs Daniel will enter our art in the 'Bee Aware Month' competition.  Good luck Room Iwa!

We also had the chance to get out into our beautiful koanga mara.  We watered the flowers for our bees.

Room 19 Explore seasonal planting in the mara kai

Today we learnt that different fruits and vegetables grow at different times of the year.  That might explain why sadly our carrot seeds did not germinate in the cold takurua winter.  Now that it's koanga spring there's lots of growth in our mara kai.  We planted spinach seeds.  After morning tea we went to the whare kai and made silverbeet and bok choi to eat.

Room 18 Compost Hangi Scraps & Prepare the Seedling House

Room 18 had a big job tipping all the Year Ono hangi scraps into the hot composters and covering it all with mulch. They'll cook over the break so our raumati garden will be full of nutrients.

Next we prepared seedling bags so we can grow over 600 native trees. After morning tea we watered the mara Kai with worm tea.

room 8 doing great!

Yesterday Room 18 and 8 did great mahi in the mara kai and nghere.  Check out this pics of them preparing the Trees for Survival seedling house, watering the mara and weeding the nghere:

Emily & Charlotte Talk with our Eco Leaders about Food Scrap Bins

Charlotte from Manukau Beautification Trust and Emily from St Kentigern came to present to the Eco Leaders today.  They were talking about the new food scrap bins that are coming in October.

Why are we getting new bins?

Food waste makes up 45% of landfill waste.

Food scraps will be turned into electricity for a whole town and compost for growing kai in Reporoa.

Find out more at https://www.ecogas.co.nz/reporoa

You can line the kitchen caddy container with compostable bin liners or paper or nothing but NOT PLASTIC.

The food scrap bins have a self locking handle.  When they are up they are locked so animals can't get in and they won't spill over.

ALL food waste can go in the food scrap bins.

Only food scraps please no containers, garden waste or puppy poo.

Put your food scraps bin out weekly with your red bin.

FOOD SCRAP CHALLENGE

Decorate your kitchen caddy.  The class with the best decorations will win a veggie garden and shared lunch.

Our Eco Leaders are going to present this information to our classes to help to get our whole Sunnyhills community on board with collecting food scraps for generating electricity and compost.

Thank you Charlotte and Emily!
