Year 6 KNZB Climate Ready Classrooms - Carbon Footprints and Case Studies

Today we started with a fun activity to indicate our carbon footprint; we took steps forwards or backwards according to our day to day activities.  Drive to school? Take 3 steps forward.  Compost at home? Take 2 steps back. We learnt that we can all make everyday choices that will reduce our environmental impact. Hopefully humans can balance our carbon in our lifetime. 🤞🌱🌏

Next we learnt about the Greenhouse Effect.  We put our learning into practice by becoming town planners fo the hypothetical town of Boulderville.  They needed a new low impact energy source.  We researched other towns to see which solution would work best and put forward a proposal.

⚡️From our discussion Aston wondered if we could create perpetual motion turbines to avoid burning stuff. Future Elon Musk!!

Have you heard about the new bioenergy initiative in Auckland and solar farms going into the Waikato.  It's great to see our learning in action for a sustainable world!

We're now an Educational Branch of Keep New Zealand Beautiful!

We are proud to announce that Sunnyhills School is now an Educational Branch of Keep New Zealand Beautiful!

Educational Branches are composed of schools who are committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship, and

who illustrate this in their key values. They provide students with engaging opportunities

for sustainability learning and highlight the importance of caring for the school and local

environment.

We look forward to even more environmental fun with KNZB in the months to come. Follow our sustainability journey on our EnviroBlog: https://shsenvironmental.blogspot.com/?m=1

The brocoli, silver beet and lettuce were ready to eat ,so we prepared a matariki mid winter feast. YUM!!

It's our last session with Fredge so lastly we drew pictures of him.  We've loved learning about growing and eating kai with Fredge.  Thanks 5+ADay!!

Electricity Generation Research

As human's desire for electricity is a major cause of pollution, Room 3 decided to take a closer look at ways of generating it.

Electricity Generation Research

How to you think New Zealand should generate electricity? Is nuclear a sustainable choice?

Room Toru Stormwater Slueths

Room 3 became citizen scientists last week when they took part in the Stormwater Slueth Project.  Follow this link to read their recounts of their mahi:

Year Rua Investigate Pollination

Year Rua continued their bee investigations today by modelling how bees and flowers work together.  Bees get nectar to eat and flowers get their pollen moved around so they can form seeds and fruit.

We observed bees in the Mara Kai and read about them.  We took part in a Mystery Science lesson to create our very own flowers models and bees.  Lastly we buzzed around the Green Room pollinating.

Next time we see Mrs Daniel we'll be making sweet treats with our Sunny Honey.

Chip Packet Project

Chip Packet Project

Sunnyhills tamariki have been using their empathy GEM on our Zero Waste journey. We learnt that our chip packets can be turned into survival blankets for those living in poverty.

Please put clean chip packets in the bin in the Koru Courtyard to help with this new iniative.
