Noodling about with Rooms Rima & Wha

Today we harvested greens and herbs from the mara kai. To celebrate our last Enviro lesson for 2023 we made Mi Goreng Veggie Ramen.  We picked red and green silverbeet, Chinese cabbage & bok choi. To add aromatic flavours we also picked mint, lemongrass and parsley.

Afterwards Room 5 planted native seedlings and fertilised the mara kai with worm tea. Room 4 turned and watered the compost and went on a biodiversity bug hunt.

Jake found a pseudoscorpion. What an awesome example of biodiversity! When we got back to class we did a little research. They have venom like a scorpion but no tail and spin silk like a spider but from their mouth parts. Wow!

Rooms 11 & 19 Bug Out

Today Room 11 & 19 found out what makes an insect. After looking closely at Mrs Daniel's weta, wasp, Gisborne cockroach and photo cards, we went on a bug hunt.

We were looking for animals that had six legs, an exoskelaton, head, thorax and abdomen.

We found skinks, worms, spiders and snails.  They aren't insects.

We also found ants, bees, bumblebees, and cockroaches.  They ARE insects.

Lastly we created our own insects making sure to include all the body parts.

Room 15 Keen Beans 🥒

Room 15 were learning about growing and eating healthy kai today.

We did some hard mahi in the mara🌱.

First we filled up the compost water tank, Then we watered the gardens with worm tea. Lastly we picked and tried baby broad beans🥒. The pods went in the worm farm, so our wiggly friends 🪱 can turn them into more fertilizer for growing more kai. That's being sustainable ♻️

Hopefully next time the kakariki strawberries will be whero 🍓
