Year Three Curious About Quince

Today Year Three explored a strange fruit growing in our orchard. It's yellow, lumpy, a bit fluffy and very hard.  They're called quince!  You can't eat them raw or they taste super bitter and sour.  Instead we picked them to cook in the hall kitchen.

While we waited for the quince to cook everyone explored the Enviro Blog on their devices.

Billie "I saw me when I was in Year 1.  I was eating spinach"

"I saw my sister in a video about the compost" Zoey

Margaux "We saw the people who are at a different school now talking about the gardens"

"The quince looked like a yelllow lumpy apple.  It felt smooth and fluffy" Evie C

"It smelt like peanuts" Ibrahim

"It smelt like perfume and a little bit sour" Evie K

We boiled the strange fruit in sugar syrup and then tasted it:

Zoey "The quince tasted like a sour sweet pineapple"
Elsie "It tasted really really sweet"
"It tasted like a sugar apple" Christina

Keaton "It sort of salty and sweet almost like a lemon"
Jasper "It tastes like boiled apples and sugar"
"Quince skin looks like banana skin" Thiweyn
Chevan "It tastes like toffee apples"
Zoe "I think quince tastes like a sweet and sour lollipop and it looks like a lumpy lemon"

Sri "It was soft and it tasted like sugar, a pinch of apple and it was smashed like potatoes".
Reyna "It smelt like candy and it tasted like sugary and sour apples".
Jaxon "It tastes like apple and pear combined with some melted sugar on top"
Sammy "It smells like raspberries.  It tasted like sour lemon. I want to try more fruits".

Year Five Spaghetti Squash Seed Savers

Today Year Five set to work saving the spaghetti squash seeds we had harvested at the beginning of term.

Do you remember the spaghetti squash we grew over raumati/summer and roasted? https://www.blogger.com/blog/post/edit/5234492709449203093/605536775667702119 We had collected the seeds from inside and dried them out.  Now it's time to store them for planting in our own mara next koanga/spring. Free kai!

We looked at various seed packets to see what a successful container would look like:

- a paper envelope with no gaps
- a title and picture
- instructions for growing that included when, where and how.

We had to think carefully to create our own seeds packets using A4 paper, glue, scissors. When we were sure it had no gaps we decorated it with pictures and instructions.  Lastly we filled them with six seeds each.

Now we can grow our own spaghetti squash or gift the seeds to some gardeners we know as an Easter surprise.

We're looking forward to continuing our Ready Steady Go Sustainable Travel topic next term.

Year 3's Pumpkin Party

Today, Year 3 read Stone Soup. The magic ingredient was sharing. That gave us an idea. We used spring onions, pumpkins and herbs along with salt, stock and dried herbs to make our own magic soup. Yum!

The pumpkins that were harvested, roasted and frozen:

Year Five Spaghetti Squash Seed Savers

Today, Year Five harvested spaghetti squash from the Mara Kai.  We carefully saved the seeds so we can grow them again next kohanga.  While the pieces of squash roasted we helped to create a "PLEASE BRING A LITTERFREE LUNCH" sign.

The spaghetti squash was delicious!  We all wanted to grow our own, so next time we are going to create seeds packets and take home our own seeds.

Year Six - What Makes SHS a GreenGold Enviroschool?

Year 6 - How are we a GreenGold Enviroschool?

Aiden - we turn food scraps into compost

Yumi - we plant trees

Olivia A - we grow vegetables

Evie - we plant hundreds of trees every year

Alexandra - we have litterfree lunches

We took part in a scavenger hunt to remind us of all the places we have created around the school to help us be more sustainable.

Afterwards K1 helped compost the Mara Kai so we can plant onions and cabbages for the Matariki Hangi,  K3 created a digital map of our Enviroschool and K2 watered the Mara Kai with worm tea to help it grow.

We are empowered learners!  This year in our sustainability lessons we would like to:

- go outside more

-do more cooking of food

- plant more trees

- eat more kai

- learn about the ocean

- learn about plants around the world

- be an Eco Leader!

- make an Enviro song

- learn more about NZ sea animals

- learn more about native animals

- learn about carniverous plants

- try new veges and fruit

- more scavenger hunts

- grow more fruit trees

- pick up litter around the school

- help trees and birds

- walk to school
