Today Cate & Ruairi visited Room 7 to talk about their work to rid NZ of pest flora and fauna.
Ruairi bought along traps, tracking cards, waxchews and even a possum, ferret, weasel and stoat to show us.
Both Cate and Ruairi were blown away with Room 7's knowledge about pests and their impact on our environment. Mrs Daniel was super proud of how much we've all learnt through our inquiry topic this term.
We're keen to share what we've learnt with our families and other schools. Stay tuned for news of the Pestival we're planning!

Our Pet Pest
While we were conducting the Landcare bird survey today with Mrs Daniel, Room 7 saw Louie, the much loved school cat, catch a silver eye. Luckily the little native bird got away, but two others were not so lucky.
Louie has been waiting for silver eyes to go under the neighbour's fruit tree net then easily catching them. Clever hunting but not great for our native birds.
Killing natives?! Does this make Louie and other cats a pest? We will be investgate more about what it means to be pests, native, endemic, or intoduced, next term.
What do you think? Is Louie a pest? Comment below.

Room 7 Enviro Launch!
Today Room 7 had our first Enviro lesson with Mrs Daniel. We worked together to complete a scavenger hunt in the edible garden. We learnt fun facts and Te Reo Maori names for our fruit and veges. We saw first hand how Sunnyhills is being sustainable.
Next in Enviro we'd like to:
- create nature art
- plant veges
- pick up litter
- weed
- create presentations
- Breakout

Room Seven Enviro Stars
A big thank you to all the Sunnyhills whanau who watered our edible gardens over the holidays. The gardens are looking lush. Classes will soon be harvesting rock melons, tomatoes, silverbeet, lettuce, zucchini, egg plants, capsicum and water melon to eat, as part of our Enviro
lessons, with Mrs Daniel. Yum!
Room Seven are now taking on the important job of watering our vege patches. Thank you! Look at the giant marrow they harvested while visiting the garden. Mrs Fowler is going to make chips out of it using her dehydrater. What a great idea! Comment below to tell us how it tasted Room Seven.
