Hearty Year Fives

Today Year Five began their lesson by taste testing the kumara we dug up last week.

Hazel "It tasted yummy."

Chase "It tasted like honey and a bit salty too."

"There were two types of kumara.  The yellow kumara had purple skin.  And there was gold kumara that was orange" Madeleine

"It was very tasty" Luci

"I expected it to taste like potato but it tasted way sweeter" Milana

Next, we logged our Wednesday Challenge results.

Today we're learning about how active travel is great for our hearts.

What do you already know about your heart?

Ciara "Your heart can beat 150 beats per minute."

Lakyn "It goes da doing da doing"

Awa "It makes you live"

Audrey "It makes your blood pump."

"Younger people's hearts beat faster" Annie

"Your heart has blood vessels that lead to other blood vessels.

We read about our hearts in our online work book. Here's some facts we found out:

Orlando "Taking your pulse is a way of measuring how fast your heart is beating."

Alice "Your heart is the size of your clenched fist."

Camelia "When you exercise you can feel your heart rate go up."

We learnt how to take our pulse and work out our BPM.  Next we graphed how our pulse changed with exercise and how long it took to come back down.

Next time we are going to find out how active travel is good for our muscles and mental health.

Sharing & Shining with Year Five

Year Five continued our picture books today to 'Share & Shine' our learning about how to get to school safely and why active travel is good for our bodies and the environment. We're looking forward to reading our creations to Year One buddies next time and taking a summative quiz to show what we have learnt in the 'Ready, Steady, Go' program.

Year Five Share & Shine our Active Travel Learning Journey

Year Five are drawing to the end of our Active Travel Inquiry so it's time to think about to share our learning.  We want to encourage the youngest tamariki to get to school safely and actively.

How could we share and shine with Five Year Olds?

Mukundi "Have a conversation and tell them what would happen if we don't do it"

Fay "Have a colouring activity"

"Take it easy they are just little kids" Kayla

"Make it into a game" Zoe

"Make a poster" Emma

"Don't use complex words" Hunter

Touma "Take them for a walk around the bike track and show them"

"Make the poster simple" Caitlin

"Take things step by step" Indigo

Lucy "Try to teach complex word"

"Show them how to ride a bike or scooter" Ivy

"Teach them how to cross the road" Lily

"Make a slide deck" Lucy

"Tell them about different places to travel to" Haniya

We decided to create pictture books to share with the Year One Classes.

Year Five Travelwise - Safe Active Travel

Today, Year Five learnt how to get to school using active travel safely.  We were lucky enough to have another giant jisaw puzzle to help us explore this concept. We turned it into another fun interclass competition:

Room 2 - 4.53min

Room 3 - 5.27min

Room 1 - 6.44min

We annotate the puzzle with how the tamariki being unsafe and provided solutions.

What did you learn?

"Always wait for the bus to leave before crossing the road" Ren

"Walk your bike or scooter in carparks" Eddie

"Stop, look, listen before crossing a drive way.  Stay alert" Evelyn

Active travel is great for our health and the environment, but we need to be safe.  Did you use active travel today?

Energetic Year Five

Today Year Five began a new enquiry into sustainable energy.  First, we had to learn what energy is and how it transforms.  Did you know that "energy can neither be created nor destroyed - only converted from one form of energy to another"?

We completed activities defining types of energy and their transformations in our online workbook. Then we did some fun experiments to create static energy with balloons, feathers, spoons, salt and pepper: S&P Experiment & Balloon Experiment

How can we seperate the salt and pepper?

Olivia A "Use the spoon to move the grains into seperate piles"

Hazel "Sieve it so the smaller pepper grains fall through"

Blake "Blow it"

We learnt we can generate static electricity to pick up the pepper by rubbing a plastic spoon on our hair and then hovering it over the mixture.

What did you observe?

Harper "I saw the pepper jump up onto the spoon"

Alexander "The more you rub the spoon the more pepper comes up"

Toby "It was static electricity"

Next time we're learning how active travel to school can use energy sustainably and it's great for our bodies and minds too. Do you walk, bike, scooter or 'park&walk' to school?

Room 1 Celebrate Being Sustainable

Today Room 1 had their last Education for Sustainability lesson for 2023.  We celebrated by harvesting bok choi from the mara kai and cooking it with pasta.  YUM. To close off our Sustainable Energy inquiry we saw Mrs Daniel's electric car give a light show and investigated why our new food scraps bins at home are helping create a sustainable future.

Lastly we lent a helping hand for our hot composters by moving the mulch that was delivered in the weekend.  Well done & see you in 2024 Room 1!

🌼🌱🌧 Room 1 Get Things Done

Room 1 researched sustainable energy options today.  Check out our mahi here: Sustainable Energy Research Groups

After lunch we worked hard in the mara kai even in the rain to weed, fertilise with worm tea, plant flowers for the bees and plant Chinese greens.  Next term we'll be able to make delicious stirfries. Thanks Room 1!

Electricity Generation Research

As human's desire for electricity is a major cause of pollution, Room 3 decided to take a closer look at ways of generating it.

Electricity Generation Research

How to you think New Zealand should generate electricity? Is nuclear a sustainable choice?

Room Tahi Get Thinking & Explore Energy

Today Room Tahi got thinking about how humans' transformation of energy is causing climate change.  We backtracked to explore what energy actually is and the forms it takes.  We learnt energy cannnot be created or destroyed, but it can be transformed.  As well as reading and online activities we transferred the chemical energy in raisins into kinetic energy when we danced.

Before morning tea we had fun creating our own static electricity with balloons and used it to pick up feathers. Because it was a humid day we had difficulty charging up our balloons.

As it was a rainy day we couldn't take action outside, so we pushed on to learning about how electricity is created in New Zealand.  Our use of electricity is changing.  Six Room 1 GEMs have electric or hybrid cars. There was a kahoot to review.

Room Rua Understand, Know & Act

Room Rua began Term 2 with Mrs Daniel.  We shared what we were grateful for in the holidays and what we're looking forward to this term.

Next we discussed the state of the environment and what different people are doing about it to remind us about why we study Sustainability.  We watched this video to reflect on the power of protest:

We aren't protesing but we are working towards a sustainable world by gaining knowledge and acting.

This term Year Five are focussing on using energy sustainably. Using energy unsustainably is causing many harmful effects to the planet.

We learnt about different types of energy and how they transform.  We had fun creating static energy at the end of the lesson.

Lastly we acted for the environment by tending to the Bird Corridor.

Nimi Visits from Live Lightly

Nimi visited from Live Lightly as part of our Year 5's Sustainable Energy Inquiry.

Here's some key points for how we can "live lightly" on the planet:

Talk - share your knowledge
Shop - buy second hand
Eat - plant based meals more often &
try to reduce meat and dairy products   overall.
Grow -     grow food at home - it saves money, fresher, seld sufficient, sustainable and reduces carbon emissions
Move -   make sustainable transport choices like electric / hybrid cars, public transport, walk, bike or scooter. Reduce your petrol car use.
Energy -   save energy by turning off lights, turn off unused electronics, have 4 minute showers

We explored the sustainable dollshouse and made our pledges to live lightly.

What habits could you change to live more sustainably?
