Sadly it was raining today, so Year 5 couldn't pot up our Trees for Survival seedlings. Luckily this gave us time to finish illustrating our Travelwise picure books that we are going to read to the Koru classes.

Year 5 Are Travelwise
Today Year Five thought about how we can independent active travelers. We want to be able to walk, bike and scooter more, because it's good for our bodies and good for the environment, but we need to be safe too.
We began our lesson by checking our class rankings for The Wednesday Challenge. Every Wednesday we try to use active travel more and log our results in an inter school and inter class competition. WELL DONE to Room 1 who are currently in second place.
Next we created a giant jigsaw puzzle. It was great fun to work as a whole class team. We timed it to make an interclass competition:
Room 2 - 5 minutes 41 seconds
Room 1 - 7 minutes 23 seconds
Room 3 - 6 minutes 38 seconds
Then we looked carefully at the picture we had created and identified children who we being unsafe. We marked them with red flags. Lastly we labelled the children with flags to describe what they should be doing.
To review we completed questions in our digital workbook.
Next time we're looking forward to taking part in Civil Defense's "Disaster Readiness" Competition.

Year Five Road Safety Week - Statistics & Heart Health
It's Road Safety Week. Well done to all our active travel super heroes!
Today Year Five learnt how active travel is good for our tinana (body); specifically our heart and muscles. We research the important role of our heart:
Renee "The heart is the size of your clenched fist"
Paris "Your heart beats about 100 000 times a day"
Brayden "Your heart beats 3 billion times in an average lifetime"
Fiona "Your heart pumps blood through the body"
Ava "The blood carries oxegen"
We learnt how to work out our beats per minute. We took our pulse for six seconds and then multiplied by 10. We found our BPM when resting, walking, running and cooling down. We graphed and analysed the results.

Year Five Travelwise - Safe Active Travel
Today, Year Five learnt how to get to school using active travel safely. We were lucky enough to have another giant jisaw puzzle to help us explore this concept. We turned it into another fun interclass competition:
Room 2 - 4.53min
Room 3 - 5.27min
Room 1 - 6.44min
We annotate the puzzle with how the tamariki being unsafe and provided solutions.
What did you learn?
"Always wait for the bus to leave before crossing the road" Ren
"Walk your bike or scooter in carparks" Eddie
"Stop, look, listen before crossing a drive way. Stay alert" Evelyn
Active travel is great for our health and the environment, but we need to be safe. Did you use active travel today?

Year Five Explore the Secrets to Happiness
Year Five continued our inquiry into active travel today. We know it's great for our fitness but did you know exercise is one of the secrets to happiness?
Our brain releases endorphins, sometimes known as ‘feel-good’ chemicals, during physical exercise which improve our energy levels, mood and help us to sleep better. When we feel energised, happy and have had plenty of sleep our self-confidence increases and our resilience improves when faced with challenges.
We read about the science behind excercise and mental well being then went on our own mood boosting brisk walk in nature.
Lastly we designed stickers to encourage children to get out and active.

"Ready, Steady, Go!" with Year Five
Year5 investigated how active travel can mitigate Climate Change and keep us healthy. We took an Auckland Transport prior knowledge quiz, then had great fun creating a giant jigsaw puzzle. It took great communication and awesome team work to solve.
Just for fun we timed each class completing the jigsaw:
Room 1 - 6:15
Room 3 - 5min
Room 2 - 5:12
Next we flagged the possible hazards with active travel and matched them with rules to keep us safe.
Next time there will be a new giant jigsaw and we'll be differentiating between the health benefits and environmental benefits of active travel

Energetic Year Five
Today Year Five began a new enquiry into sustainable energy. First, we had to learn what energy is and how it transforms. Did you know that "energy can neither be created nor destroyed - only converted from one form of energy to another"?
We completed activities defining types of energy and their transformations in our online workbook. Then we did some fun experiments to create static energy with balloons, feathers, spoons, salt and pepper: S&P Experiment & Balloon Experiment
How can we seperate the salt and pepper?
Olivia A "Use the spoon to move the grains into seperate piles"
Hazel "Sieve it so the smaller pepper grains fall through"
Blake "Blow it"
We learnt we can generate static electricity to pick up the pepper by rubbing a plastic spoon on our hair and then hovering it over the mixture.
What did you observe?
Harper "I saw the pepper jump up onto the spoon"
Alexander "The more you rub the spoon the more pepper comes up"
Toby "It was static electricity"
Next time we're learning how active travel to school can use energy sustainably and it's great for our bodies and minds too. Do you walk, bike, scooter or 'park&walk' to school?

K1 & K2 Puzzle and Plant
K1 & K2 learnt why active travel is good for tinana (our bodies) and te taiao (the environment). We collaborated to create two giant jig saw puzzles. As we get older active travel skills will mean we can be more independent as we can walk, bike, scooter or catch the bus by ourselves or with our friends. Have you planned an active travel route to your intermediate yet?
Afterwards we worked hard to move soil into the new garden beds in the Edible Garden. Best wishes for continuing your environmental journey at your new school K1 & 2!

The Travelwise group have again done a 'slow down around Schools' campaign. Watch out for posts on individual class blogs.
Most classes have a display relating to Road Safety Week using the awesome resources supplied to us by BRAKE.
The Walking School Bus routes had a 'Milo and Biscuit' morning on Friday as thank you for walking to school
We also had a group come in to show us skateboarding skills and they will be starting an after school group on a Friday. Skating is another way to come to school rather than by car.
