🌳 Rooms Ono, Wha & Whitu with Trees for Survival

Rooms Ono, Wha and Whitu had an important job this week, getting ready for our new Trees for Survival seedlings. Every year Sunnyhills School grows over 600 native trees to be planted out in the community - protecting water ways and creating new ecosystems.

Rooms 6, 4 & 7 worked hard moving potting mix and filling up the seedling bags.  Great work!  Next time we see Mrs Daniel we're looking forward to finding out more about the Nghere we are growing.

Waka Eco Warriors Visit Sunnyhills Eco Leaders

Check out the link above to find out about our Waka Eco Warrior visit.  It was great fun to make new friends and share our mahi. They loved the bike track, Trees for Survival, Hot Compost and Edible Gardens.  We're hoping we can visit Waka some time to see their heihei. And we're hoping next year to join forces at our Intermediates to carry on our Enviro action.

🌼🌱🌧 Room 1 Get Things Done

Room 1 researched sustainable energy options today.  Check out our mahi here: Sustainable Energy Research Groups

After lunch we worked hard in the mara kai even in the rain to weed, fertilise with worm tea, plant flowers for the bees and plant Chinese greens.  Next term we'll be able to make delicious stirfries. Thanks Room 1!

🐝🌻Room 10 Bee Aware

Did you know September is Bee Aware Month? We reminded ourselves or how important bees are. We wouldn't have 1/3 of our food with out them. Room 10 entered the Bee Aware Month competition. We needed to show in a drawing a world with and without pollinators. Good luck Room 14!

Lastly, we couldn't plant 🌼🌷 because of the 🌧, so instead we discovered amazing bee facts in our bee books and had a garden glove race.

Room 15 Fuel Up

Today Room 15 started our Education for Sustainability lesson by checking on our broad beans. They've grown so much! We tasted the broad bean leaves.

Next we learnt about fuelling up our bodies with 5 serves if fruit and veggies a day with Fredge. Do you like our Fredge pictures?

Lastly, we learnt to put on, take off and roll together garden gloves. Tricky! We'll be all ready to work in the mara next time.

Room 14 - Bee Aware Month

Did you know September is Bee Aware Month.  We reminded ourselves or how important bees are.  We wouldn't have 1/3 of our food with out them.  After we visited the bees and looked at the flowers we had planted, Room 14 entered the Bee Aware Month competition.  We needed to show in a drawing a world with and without pollinators.  Good luck Room 14!

Year 6 KNZB Climate Ready Classrooms - Carbon Footprints and Case Studies

Today we started with a fun activity to indicate our carbon footprint; we took steps forwards or backwards according to our day to day activities.  Drive to school? Take 3 steps forward.  Compost at home? Take 2 steps back. We learnt that we can all make everyday choices that will reduce our environmental impact. Hopefully humans can balance our carbon in our lifetime. 🀞🌱🌏

Next we learnt about the Greenhouse Effect.  We put our learning into practice by becoming town planners fo the hypothetical town of Boulderville.  They needed a new low impact energy source.  We researched other towns to see which solution would work best and put forward a proposal.

⚡️From our discussion Aston wondered if we could create perpetual motion turbines to avoid burning stuff. Future Elon Musk!!

Have you heard about the new bioenergy initiative in Auckland and solar farms going into the Waikato.  It's great to see our learning in action for a sustainable world!
