Climate Action - Baseline Data for our Carbon Footprint

In Year Five we've been focusing on Sustainable Energy.  We're now calculating our carbon footprint so we can measure the impact of the action we are taking to reduce our negative impact on the world.

You can work out our carbon footprint too and find out how to help fight climate change at https://www.futurefit.nz/

This is Mrs Daniel's carbon footprint.   Room 15's average Carbon Footprint was 5.6.  Room 14's average carbon footprint was 5.83. And Room 16's was 6.9. We found regular international travel pushed up our foot prints.  I wonder how we can offset this.

What's your Carbon Footprint? Comment below ...

TAKING ACTION - we looked at livelightly.nz and decided to pledge these actions to reduce our carbon footprint:

Cimone - Saving water - turn the tap off when I brush my teeth.

Isabelle - walk to the local shops instead of drive

James & Aayush - plan my holiday within a four hour drive of my home instead of driving

Chloe - think before i buy and get second hand clothing

Amelia - plant flowers and vegetables at home

Caleb - plant more strawberries and fruit with my my mum

Taking Action to Fight Climate Change

Year Five & Six have been focusing on Sustainable Energy & Climate Change this year. We've identified the current situation and explored alternatives. Now it's time to take action! We're planting hundreds of native trees to sequester carbon from the atmosphere and offset our carbon footprint. Thanks to Trees for Survival for supplying the seedlings and potting mix!

When we ran out of seedlings Room One found Kowhai seeds in the native bush trail and we planted those.

Giant Walk 2020

A big thank you to all the parents who accompanied us on the Giant walk. Great to see the older students looking after the younger ones. Lots of laughter and building of relationships between the different class levels. Fresh air and exercise and the realisation that we can easily walk quite a distance! Also, a big thank you to the Police Dogs Squad for coming along.

5+ A Day with Year 0/1

We've been learning about growing healthy food and eating five or more serves of fruit and veges a day.

Today the Year 1's & 0's ate broad beans, strawberries and carrots fresh from the Edible Garden.

What's your favourite healthy snack?

Planting our Tea Garden

This week our Year Three's weeded & composted in preparation for planting a tea garden.

We planted kawa kawa, camomile, kola, bergamot, sage, mint and lemongrass.

Thanks to everyone who bought Sunnyhills Sunflower Seeds; money from the sales helped us buy our tea garden plants.

We can't wait to make signs for our tea garden in different languages next week.

Brian with Bergamot - he's our inspiration for this inquiry!
